How to Build a Warehouse Security Camera System That Actually Pays for Itself

A warehouse security camera system is only useful when the cameras are pointed at the things that actually cost you money — and that is where a lot of installs go wrong. A facility can have dozens of cameras but no usable footage when an incident happens: the angles are wrong, the resolution is too low to identify a person, or the recorder failed months ago without anyone noticing.

Why Warehouses Are a Distinct Security Problem

The Core Camera Types That Earn Their Keep
You don't need 200 cameras. You need the right 30 to 60, depending on square footage and risk profile. Here are the categories worth understanding.
Dome cameras. The workhorse for indoor coverage — aisles, packing stations, common areas. They're vandal resistant and it's difficult to tell from below exactly which direction the lens is pointed, which is a deterrent in itself. PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) cameras. Useful for large open spaces where one camera can cover ground that would otherwise require several. Evaluate image detail, motion capture and retention together. Ask for samples from the actual loading doors, aisles and yard under relevant operating conditions. A megapixel count or frame-rate setting alone does not establish that the footage will answer your investigation questions.

- Edge processing. The camera itself classifies people vs. vehicles vs. objects, so operators aren't scrubbing empty footage.
